THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS HAS MET WITH THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

On 4 October 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić. 

At the meeting, the sides discussed a wide range of cooperation and highly evaluated the Secretary General’s visit to Georgia in June 2023.

The Minister thanked the Secretary General for maintaining the issue of Georgia on top of the CoE agenda, as well as for supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.

Special attention was paid to the organization's critical role in achieving the peaceful resolution of the conflict, as well as in carrying out the confidence-building projects.

Special emphasis was placed on the consolidated reports of the Council of Europe, keeping  the international community updated on the current situation in the occupied territories of Georgia.

The sides highlighted the need to give the international mechanisms an access to the occupied regions.

The Council of Europe’s contribution to the implementation of democratic reforms in Georgia was also noted.

Discussions focused on Georgia's implementation of the European Commission’s 12 recommendations and the results achieved in this regard. The minister expressed the hope that Georgia's efforts will be evaluated accordingly and the country will be granted a candidate status by the end of the year.

On a final note, the sides reaffirmed their readiness to continue close cooperation.
